Avec l’installation vidéo The Garden of a Former House Turned Museum, Chloë Lum et Yannick Desranleau mettent en scène une correspondance chantée et dansée entre une interlocutrice contemporaine anonyme et l’écrivaine brésilienne Clarice Lispector, figure importante de la littérature du XXe siècle. Dans cet hymne matérialiste, les interprètes performent avec des collaborateurs inanimés, objets aux allures aussi étranges que familières. Abordant les thèmes du langage, de la nature, de l’urbanité et de la maladie — qu’ont en commun la protagoniste et l’écrivaine —, les artistes explorent les potentiels gestuels, sonores et narratifs des corps et des objets en mettant en lumière l’aliénation vécue lorsque le premier devient carapace ou que le second prend vie.
With the video installation The Garden of a Former House Turned Museum, Chloë Lum et Yannick Desranleau feature a sung and danced correspondence between an anonymous contemporary interlocutor and the Brazilian author Clarice Lispector, an important twentieth-century literary figure. In this materialist hymn, the performers interact with inanimate collaborators, objects that are somehow both strange and familiar. Attending to the themes of language, nature, urban-ness, and illness—which the protagonist and the author have in common—the artists explore the gestural, aural, and narrative potential of bodies and objects by highlighting the alienation experienced when the former become carapaces and the latter come to life.
